“MR FOOD BANK”, GEORGE LEGER WILL BE MISSED
Cobourg: Many of those involved in Northumberland area community service were shocked and saddened to learn of the passing of George Leger, Executive Director of The Northumberland Fare Share Food Banks. George suffered a heart attack and died on Sunday, September 2nd. George is survived by his loving wife Anny, his son Rick and partner Kim, son Mike and wife Shelley. George was especially close to his grandchildren Krystle, Spencer and Raine.
George was recognized as the tireless leader for one of Canada’s most successful and respected all-volunteer food bank organizations. Cobourg and Port Hope Food Bank team members say they will deeply miss George’s driven spirit and commitment. “There will be some big shoes to fill”, said one food bank supporter as George’s countless contributions over 20 years of service were reflected upon.
His passing comes at a time of major accomplishments for Northumberland Fare Share Food Banks. Under George’s leadership, capital funding was secured for expansion of the Cobourg facility to provide fresh foods to clients. Further, new fund raising efforts were initiated to boost reserves and improve quality of service and the food offered to clients. These included the highly successful seasonal community food drives and the New Amherst Community Garden project.
The food banks' board of directors will meet tomorrow to appoint an interim executive director and will make that announcement in the coming days. In the true spirit of George Leger the services of the food banks will continue uninterrupted.
Details regarding a public celebration of life will be made available in a week’s time. Meanwhile, people are encouraged to continue their support of Northumberland Fare Share Food Banks.
