Student Volunteers
High school students can complete their volunteer hours at the Northumberland Hills Hospital. Students entering Grades 11 or 12 in September can enter our semester-linked volunteer program. Commitment for at least one semester is expected.
Semester 1: September to January
Semester 2: February to June
Applications are welcomed from students who are:
- In good academic standing with a strong commitment to learning
- Interested in expanding their knowledge of career opportunities within the health care system
In return for your commitment and energy, you will:
- Gain first hand experience of the current health care sector
- Explore your own role in the health care sector
- Discover your skills, talents and potential
- Provide a valuable service to your community while achieving your 40 hour volunteer service goal
- Receive a certificate recording your hours at the end of the school year
Students may volunteer in the following areas:
- Emergency Department: Volunteers in this department are responsible for patient and family contact and assistance during the period prior to treatment
- Inquiry Desk: The welcoming face of the hospital. Volunteers offer information to patients and visitors, as well as directing and accompanying them to their destinations as required
- Medical/Surgical Patient Care: This department offers volunteers a variety of patient contact within the Medical/Surgical unit and Birthing Suite
- Complex Care and Rehabilitation: This department offers volunteers a variety of patient contact within the Complex Care and Rehabilitation units
- Diagnostic Imaging: Students will assist patients and staff in a variety of ways

- Complete the application form available at Student Services in your school or at the Hospital Inquiry Desk or by clicking the link below
- Drop off the form, along with a cover letter and resume addressed to: "Student Volunteer Co-ordinators" at the Inquiry Desk; or scan and email to: volunteerapplications@nhh.ca
- Prepare for your interview
If you are accepted you will...
- Require a police check and a 2 Step Mantoux skin test for TB
- Sign a contract, outlining our mutual rights and responsibilities. This will include a confidentiality agreement
- Receive a general orientation to the hospital, followed by a specific orientation to the department you have selected
- Be issued a uniform and photo I.D.
- Receive your assignment and begin you duties
Once on the job, you will:
- Be aware of the expectations outlined in the Volunteer manual
- Keep accurate records of your time
- Regularly record your thoughts in your journal
- Be expected to attend scheduled meetings to discuss your progress and/or concerns
