Student Placements

At Northumberland Hills Hospital (NHH) we promote student placements as an opportunity to support continuous learning, build upon the skill and competency of the future workforce, and strengthen partnerships within the community.

Our Professional Practice team coordinates all post-secondary student placements that are affiliated with an academic institution apart from medical learners.

For inquires for medical learners, please contact MedicalAffairs@nhh.ca or apply directly through Rural Ontario Medicine Program (ROMP) at romponline.com.

For those seeking high school co-op and volunteer opportunities, please visit our Volunteer page for more information.

Requesting A Placement Opportunity

Requests for post-secondary student placements will only be coordinated through a school’s Placement Coordinator and Professional Practice at NHH.

Your school’s Placement Coordinator must send in a formal request in one of two ways:

  1. Send a request using The Health Sciences Student Placement Network (HSPnet).
  2. If your school does not have or utilize HSPnet, your Placement Coordinator must send a request to studentplacement@nhh.ca with the following information:
    • School
    • Program
    • Year of study
    • Placement dates
    • Number of hours
    • Area of interest
    • Learning objectives and/or course description

NHH follows the schedule below for receiving and responding to requests. These are strict deadlines for all nursing related placements. For all other requests, if this does not fall within the disciplines’ placement cycle, NHH will review offers up to 6 weeks before the placement start date.

Term Deadline for School to Send Requests Deadline for NHH to Accept or Deny Requests Deadline for Student Info to be Assigned by School

Placement Options

NHH supports over 200 post-secondary students per year in various departments and roles throughout the hospital. Explore our Patient Care Services page here to learn more about the services within our hospital and understand if this is an appropriate fit for you.

Clinical & Non-Clinical Placements

NHH supports students in a wide variety of disciplines, including those within the following programs:

If you do not see your program listed, have your Placement Coordinator send us a request.

Nursing Placements

NHH supports multiple nursing student groups as well as multiple preceptored nursing students per term in our Post-Acute and Acute Care units at NHH.

We support a limited number of preceptored students in our Emergency Services, Maternal Child Care and Intensive Care units each term.

Due to the high volume of requests, all nursing requests must be submitted by your school’s Placement Coordinator through HSPnet.

Confirmed Student Placements

Once a request has been confirmed, your school’s Placement Coordinator and Professional Practice at NHH will work to ensure an affiliation agreement is in place.

Students must work with their school to ensure completion of the appropriate non-academic requirements including up to date immunization records, at least two covid vaccinations, a 2 step TB test, along with a criminal reference check.

Upon confirmation of your placement, Students will receive an NHH Student Placement Manual which includes access to education and policies that must be reviewed before your first day. Each student will need to sign an attestation form and confidentiality form within this manual before they start.

For any further inquiries regarding post-secondary student placements have your placement coordinator contact studentplacement@nhh.ca.
