Back to School with FARE SHARE
Summer does have an end which means a new school year is quickly upon us. We can remember being taken to the shops to pick up binders, pens, coloured pencils, notebooks and more.
While these can be fond memories there is another dimension. People dreading the occasion of their child returning to or starting school. Or worse yet, those children who dread being seen there. The reason? Lack of food. No food for breakfast, none for lunch and possibly nothing for dinner. It is hard to believe, that while living in a community of such wealth, there are people in need. In fact 36% - the largest contingent of people using Fare Share are made up of school age kids.
WE NEED YOUR HELP. This year Fare Share Food Banks are attempting to get a jump on “Back to School” foods and snacks. It seems a simple ask but today there are new dynamics at play. Peanut butter in school is a no no. School snacks are a given. Lack of nutrition in the foods all kids can receive isn’t helpful. Fare Share does all it can to improve the availability of nutritional foods, but these are not always welcome.
We need your help – today if you can. We wish to ask, if you can, place 1 - only food item in the collection box at any leading grocer including our generous partners at Fisher’s Foodland, David’s No Frills, Cobourg and Port Hope Metro and of course, Davis’ Independent each week.
Here’s a list of what need for back to school distribution:
Pudding cups
Ritz Cheese snacks
Nutrition bars (Chewy, Granola, Nature Valley, other)
Fruit Cups
