Golf 4 MILK – Northumberland Fare Share Food Banks’ Tees Off

This year's Second Annual George Leger Memorial Golf Tournament will do as it set out to do in 2013 - raise much needed dollars to support the food banks' NEED MILK Campaign. In 2012 the food bank reviewed what it was distributing to those depending on the bank for food twice per month and set out on to improve the nutritional quality of what was being offered. One of the items identified and in great need was fresh milk - especially for youth.

At the time the food bank occasionaly was allotted milk from various programs such as Milk for Moms and The Dairy Farmers of Ontario. This allowed the bank the ability to distribute just 1 glass (milk serving) per month. Hardly enough to make a nutritional difference.

In 2013, Fare Share launched the 1st Annual Memorial Golf Tournament in George Leger's name (former executive director - 20 years standing) to raise enough money to purchase milk to serve to youth (36% of those depending on the food banks). The success of the program was so positively received and the bank raised enough money to not only provide 14 milk servings to youth per month for those under the age of 18 but it allowed distribution of fresh milk to the second key sector identified - that being seniors.

“Fare Share, this year hopes to build on last year's success”, says Executive Director Duncan Mackinnon, “we hope to raise enough money where we can send a bag of fresh milk home with every family using the food banks”.
