Palliative Care

Dedicated Care

Northumberland Hills Hospital's Speechley Palliative Care Unit is designed to accommodate patients and their families* when disease is not responsive to curative treatment. Palliative care at NHH is guided by a philosophy that affirms life as precious, in all phases of the life cycle. Palliative care neither hastens nor postpones death - it supports patients and their families each step through the journey.

The Unit is staffed by registered nurses who are committed to pain and symptom management and end-of-life care. Access to outdoor gardens and an open-air courtyard provide patients and visitors with both mental and physical relief. An overnight room for families, a private kitchen and family lounge offer comfort and convenience for palliative care patients' loved ones.

To accommodate the unique needs of Palliative Care patients, visiting hours are anytime. Unless specifically requested by the patient, family and friends are welcome 24 hours a day and there is no limit on the number of visitors. When a visit is planned by a large family group, it is helpful to the staff to be advised of this visit ahead of time. Note: COVID-19 has required a number of temporary changes to our visiting policies. Please check with the care team or see our Visiting Guidelines for the latest update.

*On the Palliative Care Unit, family is whoever the patient says it is.
