Northumberland Hills Hospital Obstetrical Care Providers
All providers look forward to working with you for a safe and joyful birth experience. You have choices, and we encourage you to take the time to choose a care provider that best suits your needs.
Obstetrician/Gynecologists (OB/GYN)
Our OB/GYNs are highly skilled trained surgeons with specialized post-graduate residency training to provide full spectrum obstetrical and gynecological care including Caesarean sections when required. They provide antenatal (before delivery) clinic-based care, intrapartum (during delivery) hospital care and they follow patients up to 6 weeks postpartum (after delivery). Newborns delivered by OB/GYNs are followed by family physicians while in hospital.

Family Physicians
Our family doctors have a broad scope of training and expertise in providing comprehensive care to families throughout the lifespan with a strong understanding of science and medicine as well as social, emotional and environmental influences on health and well-being.
Their training allows them to provide comprehensive obstetrical care with the consultation support of their OB/GYN colleagues. Family doctors provide well newborn care to their family practice patients and to newborns delivered by their OB/GYN colleagues. Additionally, they are trained in Neonatal Resuscitation to provide initial emergency care and treatment to newborns in the rare instances that this is required.

Midwives
Midwives are university trained practitioners skilled at providing care to low-risk clients and their newborns at home and/or in a hospital setting. For information on midwifery, see the Association of Ontario Midwives website here. There is currently one group of midwives credentialed to provide maternal and newborn care at NHH: New Life Midwives. Midwives work in collaboration with their OB/GYN and family practice colleagues at NHH as needed to address any pregnancy related complications or newborn care beyond their scope of practice. Midwives provide care to their clients and newborns up to 6 weeks postpartum.
