Interested in supporting your local hospital? Consider volunteering with the NHH Board as a Community Member

Meet current volunteers and learn more at the next Virtual Board Volunteer Open House on Tuesday, March 10 at 7PM

The Northumberland Hills Hospital (NHH) Board of Directors is encouraging expressions of interest from local individuals who would like to volunteer on the Board as Community Members.

If you’re interested in local health care delivery, and hospital services in particular, this rewarding volunteer opportunity may be right for you.

There will be an opportunity to meet current volunteers and learn more at the Board’s next Virtual Board Volunteer Open House on Tuesday, March 10 at 7:00 PM via Zoom.

About the Northumberland Hills Hospital Board

The Board of Directors is composed of volunteers drawn from across west Northumberland County (the area served by NHH). Each volunteer brings a unique mix of professional skills and personal work/life experiences which, together, help enable the Board to meet the governance responsibilities expected of public hospitals in the Province of Ontario. These responsibilities include:

About the unique Community Member role

As a key part of its commitment to providing meaningful opportunities for public input into the NHH Board’s decision-making processes, and as a method of succession planning for the Board, the NHH Board of Directors regularly recruits Community Members to serve on the following Board Committees:

In addition, Community Members attend and participate in full Board discussions.

Expected time commitment

Community Members currently serve up to five one-year terms. While individual time commitment may vary from year to year and committee to committee, the general expectation for Community Member participation is one Committee meeting and one full Board meeting (for a total of approximately two hours, monthly), from September through June. Board business is conducted with a mix of virtual and in-person meetings which generally fall in the early morning and early evening.

What comes after Community Member service?

Community Members may be appointed to the Board as a Director when a vacancy occurs. The skills, interests and lived experience of each Member are matched with the Board needs at the time and—as documented in Board Bylaws—with an aim to ensure representation from across the west Northumberland region that NHH serves.

Wondering if a Community Member role is right for you?

The NHH Board is committed to the NHH core values of integrity, quality, respect, compassion, and teamwork. Diverse teams lead to better decision-making and the Board is looking forward to continuing to welcome new Community Members who share these values, reflect the growing diversity of the community we serve and who have a commitment to the hospital’s shared purpose of: “People First.”

“We’re looking forward to hosting our annual Virtual Board Volunteer Open House and highlighting directly the many rewarding volunteer opportunities available with NHH’s hospital Board,” said Cyndi Gilmer, NHH Board Chair. “We understand that residents of Northumberland have many options when it comes to volunteerism. The purpose of our Virtual Forum and, new this year, a forthcoming social media campaign that will highlight some of the volunteers who serve on our Board Committees today, is to bring attention to the unique and rewarding Board opportunities that are available at NHH.”

Over the past four years, NHH has attracted interest from many talented and dedicated residents through these virtual open house opportunities.

If you or someone you may know is passionate about making a meaningful difference in the quality and service of health care in west Northumberland County, the NHH Board would like to hear from you.

Prior to the open house, attendees are encouraged to review the Expression of Interest form and related Frequently Asked Questions document, both of which can be found here in the Board section of the hospital’s website at nhh.ca.

“The Board’s next intake of Community Members is planned for mid-June 2026, in time for the introduction of new Members at the Board’s Annual Meeting on June 24,” adds Cyndi Gilmer. “Expressions of interest from Community Members are welcomed at any time of the year.”
