Interested in learning more about local health care? Consider joining the NHH Board as a Community Member

Second Virtual Board Volunteer Open House coming up Tuesday, May 9

Following a successful recruitment campaign last spring, the Northumberland Hills Hospital (NHH) Board of Directors is once again inviting expressions of interest from local individuals interested in volunteering with the Board as Community Members.

If you’re interested in local health care delivery, and you have experience as a patient or caregiver, this unique and rewarding volunteer opportunity may be something to consider.

About the Northumberland Hills Hospital Board

The Board of Directors is composed of volunteers from around west Northumberland County (the area served by NHH). Each volunteer brings a unique mix of skills and work/life experiences which help enable the Board to meet the responsibilities expected of it in the Province of Ontario. These responsibilities include:

About the unique Community Member role

As a key part of its commitment to providing meaningful opportunities for public input into the NHH Board’s decision-making processes, and as a method of succession planning for the Board, the NHH Board of Directors regularly recruits Community Members to serve on the following Board Committees—Quality and Safety, Finance and Audit, Governance and Facilities and Campus Development—in addition to participation in full Board discussions.

Time Commitment

While the annual time commitment may vary from year to year and committee to committee, as a general practice the expectation for Community Members is participation in one Committee meeting and one full Board meeting (approximately two hours each, or four hours in total) every other month, from September through June. Participation throughout the pandemic has been virtual but it is expected that Board business will in time return to in-person meetings—generally early morning and early evening. Community Members serve up to five one-year terms.

What comes after Community Member service?

Community Members may be appointed to the Board as a Director when a vacancy occurs. The skills, interests and lived experience of each Member are matched with the Board needs at the time, as is the longstanding tradition at NHH—as documented in Board Bylaws—of ensuring representation from across the west Northumberland region that NHH serves.

Wondering if a Community Member role is right for you?

The NHH Board is committed to the NHH core values of integrity, quality, respect, compassion and teamwork. Diverse teams lead to better decision-making and the Board is looking forward to continuing to welcome new Community Members who share these values and who have a commitment to the recently updated shared purpose of the hospital: “People First.”

“Service to a hospital board is rewarding and important and we sincerely hope that local residents will once again be encouraged to take the opportunity to learn more about volunteer opportunities with the NHH Board,” said Beth Selby, NHH Board Chair, in extending the 2023 call for interest. “An Expression of Interest form and a related Frequently Asked Questions document will be found in the Board section of the hospital’s website. Please consider completing an Expression of Interest, and join us for our second annual Virtual Board Volunteer Open House on Tuesday, May 9 at 7PM for an overview of the opportunities available, to meet current Board and Community members and ask any questions you may have. While it is our aim to coordinate the next intake of new Community Members by mid-June, 2023, in time for the introduction of new Members at the Board’s Annual Meeting on June 22, the Board welcomes expressions of interest from Community Members at any time of the year.”
