NHH Board hosts third Virtual Board Volunteer Open House
Interested in serving your local hospital? Consider joining the NHH Board as a Community Member!
Meet current volunteers and learn more at the Virtual Board Volunteer Open House on Wednesday, March 20 at 7PM
The Northumberland Hills Hospital (NHH) Board of Directors is inviting expressions of interest from local individuals interested in volunteering with the Board as Community Members.
If you’re interested in local health care delivery, and you have experience as a patient, caregiver, or both, this unique and rewarding volunteer opportunity may be something to consider.
There will be an opportunity to meet current volunteers and learn more next month, at the Board’s third annual Virtual Board Volunteer Open House. Hosted on Zoom, the Virtual Open House will take place on Wednesday, March 20 at 7:00 PM.
About the Northumberland Hills Hospital Board
The Board of Directors is composed of volunteers drawn from around west Northumberland County (the area served by NHH). Each volunteer brings a unique mix of skills and work/life experiences which, together, help enable the Board to meet the responsibilities expected of it in the Province of Ontario. These responsibilities include:
- providing strategic direction to the Hospital’s management team;
- selecting the Chief Executive Officer and Chief of Staff and evaluating performance;
- providing oversight to the physician credentialing process; and
- monitoring the operational and financial performance of the hospital.
About the unique Community Member role
As a key part of its commitment to providing meaningful opportunities for public input into the NHH Board’s decision-making processes, and as a method of succession planning for the Board, the NHH Board of Directors regularly recruits Community Members to serve on the following Board Committees—Quality and Safety, Finance and Audit, Governance and Facilities and Campus Development—in addition to participation in full Board discussions.
Expected time commitment
Community Members serve up to five one-year terms. While the individual time commitment may vary from year to year and committee to committee, as a general practice the expectation for Community Members is participation in one Committee meeting and one full Board meeting (approximately two hours each, or four hours in total) every other month, from September through June. While participation throughout the pandemic was virtual, Board business is now being conducted with a mix of virtual and in-person meetings which generally fall in the early morning and early evening.
What comes after Community Member service?
Community Members may be appointed to the Board as a Director when a vacancy occurs. The skills, interests and lived experience of each Member will be matched with the Board needs at the time and—as documented in Board Bylaws—with an aim to ensure representation from across the west Northumberland region that NHH serves.
Wondering if a Community Member role is right for you?
The NHH Board is committed to the NHH core values of integrity, quality, respect, compassion, and teamwork. Diverse teams lead to better decision-making and the Board is looking forward to continuing to welcome new Community Members who share these values and who have a commitment to the hospital’s shared purpose of: “People First.”
“Volunteering with a hospital board is an opportunity to have a meaningful impact on the quality and service of health care in your community,” said Beth Selby, NHH Board Chair, in extending the 2024 call for interest. “This is our third year hosting a Virtual Board Volunteer Open House and we are looking forward to once again talking with residents interested in learning more about volunteer opportunities with the NHH Board. In addition to learning about the Community Member role, there will be a chance to speak directly with current Board and Community Members and ask questions. Attendees are encouraged to review the Expression of Interest form and related Frequently Asked Questions document, both of which can be found here in the Board section of the hospital’s website at nhh.ca. While we have planned to coordinate the next intake of new Community Members by mid-June 2024, in time for the introduction of new Members at the Board’s Annual Meeting on June 26, the Board welcomes expressions of interest from Community Members at any time of the year.”
