Don Morrison accepts interim appointment to NHH Board
Don Morrison has accepted an interim appointment at the Northumberland Hills Hospital Board table. Most recently a Community member on both the Finance and Audit and Governance Committees, Morrison—who is a resident of Cobourg (Ward 2 in the Hospital’s three-ward system)—will assume the seat left vacant by Kai Liu. The appointment was recommended by the Nominating Committee at the Board’s December 5th meeting, and unanimously endorsed.
A Community Member since November, 2017, Don Morrison brings a unique combination of public accounting and business expertise accumulated over a distinguished career as a Chartered Accountant and financial executive.
Previously a Board Director of Northumberland Health Care Corporation (1999-2004), Morrison served as Chairman of the New Hospital Committee (1999-2001) and was Board Chair (2001-2004) at the time Northumberland Hills Hospital opened its doors in October 2003.
An honours graduate of the Western Business School, Don received his MBA from York University in 1968. Trained as a Chartered Accountant with Deloitte Haskins & Sells in Toronto, Morrison began his career with that firm, serving first as senior Audit Manager and then National Staff Director. In 1964 he joined the Royal Bank of Canada in Montreal, progressing through successively more senior roles until becoming Assistant General Manager in 1968. In 1972 he was recruited to the Canada Development Corporation, first as Chief Financial Officer, then Executive Vice-President and number two operating officer, before leaving to assume the role of Director of Corporate Services with Burns Fry Limited. From 1979 to early 1980 Morrison was Senior Vice-President for the Bank of Nova Scotia and head of that bank's Canadian Corporate Banking Division. From February 1980 until his retirement in 2015, he spent his professional time as a business and financial consultant with emphasis on strategic planning, mergers and acquisitions, financial evaluation and negotiation and litigation support services.
A resident of Cobourg since 1997, Morrison's local volunteer activities include terms on the Board and Executive Committee of the Art Gallery of Northumberland (1998-2001); Director, Lakefront Utilities (2004-2007); various Town of Cobourg committees; and, from 2012-2014, Board Member, Ontario Shores Mental Health Centre, serving as a member of the Finance and Quality as well as Audit Committees.
Composed of volunteers, directors on NHH’s skills-based Board:
- develop Hospital policy;
- make decisions about the Hospital’s future (strategic planning); and
- monitor operational and financial performance.
Morrison’s appointment is considered interim pending the next Annual General Meeting in June. He will continue to serve on the Governance and Finance and Audit Committees. He will also take on a new role on the Facilities and Campus Development Committee.
“We are thrilled to see Don return to the NHH Board as a full Director,” said Pam Went, Board Chair. “We thank him for accepting this increased role and know that the Hospital and, by extension, the community it serves will benefit from his unique understanding of the organization’s history and future priorities.”
