Kai Liu
Ward 2
As a trailblazer, in 1986 Liu was recruited by the Ottawa Police Force as the City's first Asian police officer. During his 22-year career with the Ottawa Force he has held many challenging positions and developed a reputation as an innovator, a champion for diversity in the workplace and a strong mentor and advocate for women in policing.
Since early in his policing career, Liu has and continues to be an active member/director of various community boards.
On the invitation of both the United Nations and CIDA (the Canadian International Development Agency) Liu has lectured on domestic violence and violence against women in countries around the world. He is the recipient of numerous community and policing awards. In 2014 he was inducted into the Order of Merit of the Police Forces by the Governor General of Canada.
In May of 2016, Liu was presented with the Presidential OWLE Award by the Ontario Women in Law Enforcement (OWLE) Association for his career-long work supporting women in policing.
As the first visible minority police chief in Ontario, Liu has served four years as the Chief of Police with the Town of Gananoque and in September 2012 was appointed Cobourg's Chief of Police. Previously a Community Member of the NHH Board, Liu now serves as a Director on the Facilities and Campus Development Committee as well as the Quality and Safety Committee.
