Access to Information and Privacy

In late October 2009, the Ontario Hospital Association asked the provincial government to extend coverage of the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (FIPPA) to the province’s hospitals as a means of promoting transparency and public accountability.

FIPPA legislation is not new to Ontario. It came into effect in the province in 1988, and was extended to many local public bodies, including educational institutions, in 2006.

FIPPA will be extended to Ontario hospitals effective January 1, 2012. Access to a range of recorded information held by NHH is provided for under FIPPA, including records of personal information in the custody or control of the hospital from January 1, 2007, subject to certain exemptions and exclusions.

Protecting your privacy is important to Northumberland Hills Hospital. NHH promises to ensure that your confidential information is kept secure and used only for the purposes stated.
