Spring Fever event returns! Saturday, May 11th 2013
On Saturday, May 11th, from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM, Northumberland Hills Hospital Auxiliary will hold its second annual signature event. Spring Fever is held on the day before Mother’s Day and a couple of weeks before May 24th planting weekend. It’s all about gardens and gardening.
Scott’s Barn, 160 McLean Road north of Cobourg, is the home of Pat Scott’s annual Lavender Festival. It’s also home to Spring Fever (for directions to the barn check the website: scottsbarn.ca).
Thanks to Pat we have the use of the barn – a magnificent two-story building – and the gardens. Indoors and outdoors there will be artists and crafters selling all manner of hand made magic, all with a gardens and gardening theme. Local nurseries will be there with plants and planters and baskets and Port Hope’s Furby House will have gardening books. And of course Pat will be there with her wonderful lavender products. (There will be an ATM machine for your convenience.)
Local caterer Tina Moorey will be there, as will Mark Pollard from Warkworth with his scrumptious shortbread cookies. There’ll be addictive Beaver Tails and ice cream (rhubarb ginger, vanilla bean, and a decadent chocolate) from Prince Edward County ice cream makers Slickers.
Fascinating speakers will inform, educate and take questions. At 11:00 a.m. master stone wall builder John Shaw-Rimmington will tell us how to create dry stone structures, Lesley Marie Boileau will discuss Intensive Urban Gardening at 12:00 noon, Melissa Spearing will demonstrate The Art of Pruning at 1:00 p.m., Paul Heydon will explain Why we should Garden with Native Plants at 2:00, and at 3:00 p.m. Pam Lancaster of Ganaraska Regional Conservation Authority will talk about Water Conservation Gardening. Local Master Gardeners will have a booth and be available to answer all your gardening questions.
As if that’s not enough there will be amazing draw prizes. All our vendors will contribute to it and there will also be a cast aluminum patio furniture set valued at $200 and a spinner bicycle valued at $400. Get your exercise at the same time as admiring your garden! Tickets will be $2 or 3 for $5.
Admission to Spring Fever is free but donations are gratefully accepted. There will be huge planters for cash donations. to a very good cause: all funds raised by the NHH Auxiliary go to the purchase of hospital equipment.
At Spring Fever you will find Mother’s Day gifts and just about everything you need for the May 24th planting weekend. Come to Scott’s Barn on May 11th and see for yourself. For further information call the Auxiliary office at 905.372.6811, extension 4630.
