Mental health services enhanced through regional collaboration
Patients, family members and staff involved with Northumberland Hills Hospital’s community-based Mental Health Program are benefiting from an exciting new regional collaboration with Ontario Shores Centre for Mental Health Sciences (Ontario Shores). Approved in late April 2010 by the Board of the Central East Local Health Integration Network (Central East LHIN), the collaboration—considered a “voluntary integration” by the LHIN—began to take shape over the past year as the organizations explored new ways to improve mental health services in the west Northumberland region.
While still in its early days, the collaboration between NHH and Ontario Shores Centre for Mental Health Sciences (Ontario Shores) has had a measurable impact on the quality of mental health care in the area.
“From our patients’ perspective, NHH’s relationship with Ontario Shores has improved access to specialized mental health services and decreased fragmentation of care,” notes Helen Brenner, NHH’s Vice President of Patient Services and Chief Nursing Executive.
