2009 Health Professions Scholarships Announced

Two local students were awarded cheques of $1,000 this evening, at the presentation of NHH’s annual Health Professions Scholarships. The proud recipients of the award were invited to the August meeting of the NHH Board of Directors, together with members of their families, to receive their prizes and the Board’s applause for their outstanding achievements.

Created in 2003, the near-term purpose of the NHH Health Professions Scholarship Program is to provide financial assistance to students from west Northumberland who are pursuing a career in the health care sector. By supporting local students early in their academic careers, NHH hopes—in the long term—to encourage these teens to consider their home-town Hospital when the time comes to select an employer in the future.

In addition to being enrolled or accepted for enrollment in a full-time study program, applicants are evaluated on the basis of their academic achievements, extra-curricular activities, a testimonial explaining their interest in the field and two written references

NHH’s 2009 Health Professions Scholarship recipients are Emily Taylor and Hilary Dickson.

A recent graduate of St. Mary’s Secondary School in Cobourg, Emily Taylor will be attending McMaster University this fall, where she has been accepted into the Honours Integrated Science program. One of only 45 students to receive an offer into the program from a large number of applicants, Emily is making an important first step toward her ultimate goal of becoming a medical doctor.

In addition to delivering a consistently strong academic performance at St. Mary’s, Emily has volunteered her skills in the community in a number of areas, including the NHH Youth Cares Committee of the Northumberland Hills Hospital Foundation.

Hilary Dickson, also of Cobourg, graduated from Cobourg District Collegiate Institute West this past year. She has been accepted into the Nursing program at the University of Western Ontario in London. Hilary’s scholarship application included extensive evidence of extra-curricular activities, including—most notably—a recent volunteer experience in Tanzania, where she worked for three months in an orphanage.

“Hilary and Emily, we look forward to the day you graduate from your respective studies, and consider bringing your skills back to the community and Northumberland Hills Hospital,” said John Hudson, Chair of the NHH Board of Directors. “Congratulations on your achievements to date, and, on behalf of the Board and the Hospital, our very best wishes for a successful and enjoyable year.”
