Northumberland’s Biggest Coffee Morning Returns for Sixth Year

NORTHUMBERLAND COUNTY – Gather your friends, co-workers, neighbours or family together on Wednesday, June 6th , 2012 and raise your coffee mugs during Northumberland’s Biggest Coffee Morning to raise funds for the Northumberland Hills Hospital (NHH).

This year’s Northumberland’s Biggest Coffee Morning will be held in memory of three fine gentlemen in the community who sadly passed away this past year – Charles (Chuck) Orviss, Nick O’Nians and Hawley Hoselton.

Chuck Orviss

Chuck was a loyal NHH Auxillary volunteer who served the organization well for over the past decade. He was also a long-time member (60 years) of Calvary Baptist Church. Many in the community will fondly remember Chuck from his days of ownership of Cobourg Variety.

Nick O’Nians

A resident of Port Hope, Nick served his community in a multitude of ways including membership in the Cobourg Rotary Club, Sea Cadets of Northumberland Branch, and as a member of the Board of Directors of the Northumberland Hills Hospital for the past decade.

Hawley Hoselton

A beloved figure of downtown Cobourg, Hawley was the owner of the popular downtown café and bakery, The Dutch Oven. He was a long-time director on the Public Utility Board and a well-known and respected businessman.

Organizers of Northumberland’s Biggest Coffee Morning have spoken with the families of Chuck, Nick and Hawley and they are very supportive and pleased that this year’s coffee morning event will be in their honour.

“Hosting a coffee morning is fun and easy,” said Joan Moss Coffee Morning event spokesperson. “Simply invite some guests into your home, business, church, school, community centre, or any other place of your choosing. Serve some coffee and maybe a few sweets, and in return guests are invited to make a donation to support the purchase of 2 laparoscopes for the Surgical Services program at the hospital. These items are a priority for the hospital and we’re going to do our best to raise the $42,000 required to make this possible.”

“We want people to be creative this year,” said Joan. Hosting a party doesn’t mean you only have to serve coffee. We’ve had many different successful parties in the past including a wine tastings, beer parties and barbeques. Don’t limit yourself to just coffee; there are tons of other ideas, and they don’t have to be hosted exactly on June 6th, host a weekend party if it is more convenient for you!”

While the majority of our hospitals’ operating dollars flow from Ontario’s Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care, funding for capital equipment remains the responsibility of the community whose members will benefit most from their own investment. Therefore, participation in Northumberland’s Biggest Coffee Morning helps to ensure that our doctors, nurses and staff will have access to up-to-date medical equipment to continue to provide the highest quality health care services possible right here in our own community. Since it began in 2007, Northumberland’s Biggest Coffee Morning has raised $264,000 for the hospital.

Northumberland’s Biggest Coffee Morning is sponsored by Sabic Innovative Plastics, Cobourg Internet and Alison Sprayson of Bright Ideas Design.

About Northumberland Biggest Coffee Morning

Northumberland’s Biggest Coffee Morning began in 2007. It was the idea of a woman by the name of Alma Draper who had heard about an event in England called the World’s Biggest Coffee Morning. Northumberland’s first event was held in memory of dedicated local volunteer June Harvey. Since 2007, over $264,000 has been raised through this event for essential medical equipment for Northumberland Hills Hospital. The concept is simple - encourage businesses, homeowners or community groups to gather people together for coffee, cake or other creative party ideas. In return the guests are asked to make a donation to the Northumberland Hills Hospital Foundation.
