LOCATION

Located approximately 100 kilometres east of Toronto, NHH delivers a broad range of acute, post-acute, outpatient and diagnostic services. Acute services include emergency and intensive care, medical/surgical care, obstetrical care and palliative care. Post-acute specialty services (PASS) include restorative care and rehabilitation. Mental health care, cancer and supportive care, dialysis and other ambulatory care clinics are offered on an outpatient basis through partnerships with regional centres and nearby specialists. NHH offers a full range of diagnostic services, including magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), computed tomography (CT) and mammography. The hospital serves the catchment area of west Northumberland County. ROLE OVERVIEW

Reporting to the Manager of Pharmacy, as part of a multidisciplinary team, the Pharmacy Technician is responsible for duties as outlined below:

  • Drug distribution to all clinical areas, including dispensing of narcotic and controlled substances, patient specific medication, stocking automated dispensing cabinets, verifying accuracy as part of “Tech-check-Tech”
  • Dispensing of in-patient medications, leave of absence medications, and other patient specific medication orders
  • Generating BPMH from patient interview, collecting sources from community pharmacies or other facilities, and working closely with other interprofessional teams
  • Drug repackaging, including narcotics, the use of automated packaging equipment and software
  • Maintaining established medication levels in pharmacy as well as in the automated dispensing cabinets including narcotics and controlled substances
  • Compounding and packaging of sterile and non-sterile medications including bio-hazardous agents in acceptance of manufacturing practice and WHMIS guidelines.
  • Conducting continuous improvement audits as designated, including expiration date, and monitoring and medication area inspections
  • Maintenance of crash cart inventory and records
  • Assisting in maintaining records of purchase, issue and returns in accordance with hospital and legal requirement
  • Performing miscellaneous projects, filing and clerical duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS/REQUIREMENTS

  • A diploma from an accredited community college Pharmacy Technician program, or equivalent.
  • Registration with the OCP as a Registered Pharmacy Technician.
  • Recent hospital pharmacy experience preferred or comparable applicable work experience.
  • Familiarity with pharmacy and medical terminology, aseptic techniques, manufacturing and labeling standards of practice, pharmacy calculations required.

EMPLOYMENT REQUIREMENTS

Successful applicants are required provide a satisfactory vulnerable sector criminal reference check, that was complete less than one year from the date of hire. This requirement must be met within the first sixty (60) days of employment.

Additionally, to the above, successful applicants are also required to complete the Health Care Worker Health review process which includes providing an up-to-date immunization record to ensure compliance with the Ontario Hospital Association Communicable Diseases Surveillance Protocols within the first thirty (30) days of employment. Northumberland Hills Hospital operates a mandatory COVID-19 vaccination policy for all staff.
