LOCATION & ABOUT NHH

Located approximately 100 kilometres east of Toronto, NHH delivers a broad range of acute, post-acute, outpatient and diagnostic srvices. Acute services include emergency and intensive care, medical/surgical care, obstetrical care and palliative care. Post-acute specialty services (PASS) include restorative care and rehabilitation. Mental health care, cancer and supportive care, dialysis and other ambulatory care clinics are offered on an outpatient basis through partnerships with regional centres and nearby specialists. NHH offers a full range of diagnostic services, including magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), computed tomography (CT) and mammography. The hospital serves the catchment area of west Northumberland County. SUMMARY OF DUTIES

Reporting to the Clinical Manager, Access and Flow, the Occupational Therapist will be part of the Allied Health team at NHH with a primary focus as part of a Geriatric Activation Team targeting intensive intervention for patients in the Emergency Department.  The Occupational Therapist (OT) will work closely with the team, patient and families providing assessment and recommendations for safe discharge to support ED diversion and admission avoidance. The OT must be able to fulfill a multi-dimensional role of clinician, consultant, and educator of patient care.  

  • Ability to develop, implement, document and evaluate programs in collaboration with the patient and family in conjunction with the health care team.
  • Ability to continually assess, monitor, evaluate and revise patient care plans as necessary in conjunction with assessment findings and Physician diagnosis
  • Recommend consultants and/ or provide adaptive equipment, splints, aids in remedial program and activities of daily living
  • Participate as a member of the interdisciplinary team and consult with members of the team regarding patient care.
  • Establish and maintain statistical data documentation for clinical and administrative progress as required
  • Demonstrate knowledge, understanding and leadership skills in occupational therapy issues
  • Ability to facilitate educator role with patients, family members and the public
  • Act as a member of quality assurance programs within the department and the hospital
  • Recognize responsibility for continuing education to maintain professional standards
  • In addition to the above, follows safe and healthy work practices and maintains a safe and healthy work environment through attendance at educational programs, use of established reporting mechanisms for injuries, illness and hazards and adherence to health and safety related policies and procedures

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED

  • Graduate from an approved School of Occupational Therapy from an accredited University
  • Eligible for registration with the Canadian Association of Occupational Therapists (C.A.O.T.)
  • Member of the College of Occupational Therapy
  • 3 to 5 years of previous experience in a similar role in a hospital setting
  • Supervisory/management skills
  • Demonstrated excellent organization and problem solving skills
  • Able to function independently in a consultative role
  • Experience in working as part of a Multidisciplinary Team
  • Critical thinking ability
  • Exemplary communication and facilitator skills

  • Able to work in an active, rapidly changing stressful environment with multiple demands
  • Ability to make decisions and prioritize effectively; must have sufficient physical endurance including manual dexterity to handle patients and equipment effectively and safely

EMPLOYMENT REQUIREMENTS

Successful applicants are required provide a satisfactory vulnerable sector criminal reference check, that was complete less than one year from the date of hire. This requirement must be met within the first sixty (60) days of employment.

Additionally, to the above, successful applicants are also required to complete the Health Care Worker Health review process which includes providing an up-to-date immunization record to ensure compliance with the Ontario Hospital Association Communicable Diseases Surveillance Protocols within the first thirty (30) days of employment. Northumberland Hills Hospital operates a mandatory COVID-19 vaccination policy for all staff.
