LOCATION
Located approximately 100 kilometres east of Toronto, NHH delivers a broad range of acute, post-acute, outpatient and diagnostic services. Acute services include emergency and intensive care, medical/surgical care, obstetrical care and palliative care. Post-acute specialty services (PASS) include restorative care and rehabilitation. Mental health care, cancer and supportive care, dialysis and other ambulatory care clinics are offered on an outpatient basis through partnerships with regional centres and nearby specialists. NHH offers a full range of diagnostic services, including magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), computed tomography (CT) and mammography. The hospital serves the catchment area of west Northumberland County. A mixed urban and rural population of approximately 67,000 residents, west Northumberland comprises the Town of Cobourg, the Municipality of Port Hope, Alderville First Nation and the townships of Hamilton, Cramahe and Alnwick/Haldimand. ROLE OVERVIEW
Reporting to the Director of Clinical Services, in collaboration with the Department Medical Chief, the Patient Care Manager provides the vision, strategic direction, leadership, and operational management for the Emergency Department in alignment with the Hospital’s mission, vision, values, and strategic direction.
The Patient Care Manager provides visible leadership and demonstrates responsibility, accountability, and commitment to the development of a work environment that exemplifies interprofessional and ethical practice; professional autonomous decision making; integrative thinking; appreciative inquiry; a shared governance philosophy; and recognition through the support of professional development and continuing education opportunities for the program.
The Patient Care Manager accomplishes this by developing, implementing, and evaluating efficient, effective, and evidence-informed practices including unit and patient care processes, interprofessional collaboration, ethical practices, and continuing staff development opportunities with the goal of creating a safe patient care and workplace environment.
The successful candidate will have demonstrated understanding of organizational change management, operational improvement, performance management, culture, and the ability to support the sustainability of process improvements in the Emergency Department and has a sound knowledge of Pay For Performance Funding Models.
As an integral part of this role, the Patient Care Manager works collaboratively with all members of the health care team and all programs, departments, and services throughout NHH to support efficient and effective patient access and flow allowing all patient care programs to accomplish NHH’s shared purpose of People First.
QUALIFICATIONS/REQUIREMENTS
- Registered Nurse in good standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario
- Minimum 5 years’ Emergency Services experience
- Master’s degree in Health Sciences, Administration or Business Administration preferred
- Minimum of five years of recent leadership experience including involving and motivating teams of diverse professionals in achieving desired results
- Advanced emergency services knowledge and understanding of current trends.
- Advanced knowledge related to interprofessional and ethical practice, principles of teaching and adult learning, and health care disciplines and their role in patient care
- Commitment to creating a positive patient and caregiver experience
- Evidence of effective communication and conflict resolution skills with the ability to develop positive working relationships with all stakeholders promoting collective problem-solving approaches
- Excellent interpersonal skills with a strong orientation to staff development and staff empowerment
- Ability to prioritize and respond to multiple competing demands from patients, families, staff, physicians, and other programs and departments
- Proficient with computer databases, spreadsheets, MS Office and internet searches
- Demonstrated compliance with all Occupational Health and Safety Legislation and Infection Prevention and Control practices
- Proven leadership skills including strong financial, human resource, labor relations, quality management, change management, and utilization management skills.
- Ability to manage multiple competing priorities from patients, families, staff, physicians, and colleagues.

- Completion of OHA management courses or equivalent
- Experience in Program Management and Change Management
- Experience in Patient and Family Co-Design in healthcare

EMPLOYMENT REQUIREMENTS
Successful applicants are required provide a satisfactory vulnerable sector criminal reference check, that was complete less than one year from the date of hire. This requirement must be met within the first sixty (60) days of employment.
Additionally, to the above, successful applicants are also required to complete the Health Care Worker Health review process which includes providing an up-to-date immunization record to ensure compliance with the Ontario Hospital Association Communicable Diseases Surveillance Protocols within the first thirty (30) days of employment. Northumberland Hills Hospital operates a mandatory COVID-19 vaccination policy for all staff.
