LOCATION

Located approximately 100 kilometres east of Toronto, NHH delivers a broad range of acute, post-acute, outpatient and diagnostic services. Acute services include emergency and intensive care, medical/surgical care, obstetrical care and palliative care. Post-acute specialty services (PASS) include restorative care and rehabilitation. Mental health care, cancer and supportive care, dialysis and other ambulatory care clinics are offered on an outpatient basis through partnerships with regional centres and nearby specialists. NHH offers a full range of diagnostic services, including magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), computed tomography (CT) and mammography. The hospital serves the catchment area of west Northumberland County. A mixed urban and rural population of approximately 67,000 residents, west Northumberland comprises the Town of Cobourg, the Municipality of Port Hope, Alderville First Nation and the townships of Hamilton, Cramahe and Alnwick/Haldimand. ROLE OVERVIEW

The Clinical Extern position is an exciting opportunity for nursing students. Clinical Externs work as unregulated health care providers under the supervision of regulated health care professionals and are supported by a dedicated Clinical Extern Mentor Coordinator. Through a patient and family-centered approach, they provide direct and indirect patient care and clinical unit support while simultaneously gaining knowledge, skill, and exposure to a hospital environment.  Clinical Externs are valued members of the health care team and work collaboratively with the interdisciplinary team to achieve our organizational goal of providing “exceptional care, every time, for every person.”

Our Clinical Extern program offers flexible, self-scheduled 8 & 12 hour (day/evening/night/weekend) shifts to accommodate the busy nature of academic schedules. Clinical Externs must be available to work a minimum of one shift (8 or 12 hour) every 2 weeks to meet program expectations.

Clinical Externs are hired for a 4-month term, which is subject to renewal based on the Clinical Externs meeting the program expectations and the organization’s continued need for Clinical Extern roles. Once Clinical Externs obtain their professional licence, they are no longer eligible to be part of the Enhanced Extern Program.

SUMMARY OF DUTIES

  • Assist with hygiene activities including bathing, oral care, incontinence care
  • Assist with lifting, turning, positioning, transporting, and ambulating
  • Set up meals and feeding
  • Perform purposeful rounding and report changes or concerns to staff nurse
  • Assist with comfort measures
  • Keep environment clean, tidy, and free of hazards
  • Answer call bells
  • Stock supplies such as isolation carts
  • Document within scope in the Clinical Information System
  • Request assistance with assigned duties whenever in need
  • Participate as a valued team member
  • Maintain dignity and self‐esteem of patients and families in delivery of care
  • Practice patient privacy and confidentiality
  • Practice behaviors consistent with the mission, vision, and values of Northumberland Hills Hospital requirements

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED

  • Nursing students that are in any year of study (with preference given to year 3 and 4) in a College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO) approved Baccalaureate Nursing (BScN or BN) program and in a Practical Nursing (PN) program; OR
  • Internationally Educated Nurses (IENs) who have initiated registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO), have received a CNO letter of direction and meet one of the following:
    • are in any year of study in a CNO approved program, such as a BScN-IEN program, PN-IEN program, or
    • are completing a micro-credential plan with a curriculum to meet the CNO requirements for registration (e.g. Standards of Practice for nursing, Entry-to Practice Competencies, Evidence of Safe Practice, Evidence of English Language Proficiency) or
    • have completed their educational requirements (e.g. BScN-IEN/PN-IEN program or micro-credentialing) and are waiting to write their registration exam

​In addition:

  • Demonstrated evidence of excellent academic standing
  • Evidence of successful learning experiences in recent clinical placements
  • Current certificate in Basic Cardiac Life Support
  • Recent acute care patient care experience preferred
  • Effective interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Excellent problem-solving, decision making, and critical thinking skills
  • Excellent organizational skills and ability to prioritize workload effectively
  • Demonstrated understanding of infection prevention and control practices
  • Demonstrated behaviour consistent with the mission, vision, and values of Northumberland Hills Hospital
  • Proven good attendance record with capabilities of maintaining this same standard. 

PHYSICAL EFFORT AND WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Ability to work in an active, rapidly changing, stressful environment with multiple demands
  • Ability to focus on tasks in an environment with many distractions
  • Physical ability to lift, pull, push, carry, reach, and physically support patients with assistance, as required
  • Ability to stand for prolonged periods of time with repetitive bending
  • Adheres to safe and healthy workplace practices and maintains a safe and healthy work environment through attendance at educational programs, use of established mechanisms for injuries and hazards, and adheres to health and safety related policies and procedures

EMPLOYMENT REQUIREMENTS

Successful applicants are required to provide a satisfactory vulnerable sector criminal reference check, that was complete less than one year from the date of hire. This requirement must be met within the first sixty (60) days of employment.

Additionally to the above, successful applicants are also required to complete the Health Care Worker Health review process which includes providing an up-to-date immunization record to ensure compliance with the Ontario Hospital Association Communicable Diseases Surveillance Protocols within the first thirty (30) days of employment. Northumberland Hills Hospital operates a mandatory COVID-19 vaccination policy for all staff.
