LOCATION
Located approximately 100 kilometres east of Toronto, NHH is a vibrant community hospital delivering a broad range of acute, post-acute, outpatient and diagnostic services. Directly serving a growing population of more than 60,000 residents spread across a mix of urban and rural settings, NHH directly employs approximately 750 people and relies on the additional support provided by a highly engaged and supportive network of physicians, midwives and volunteers.
ROLE OVERVIEW
The primary role of this position is transporting stable patients or assisting with those patients requiring nursing supervision during transport to destinations within the Hospital. Secondarily, other responsibilities or duties are carried out when no patient transport is required.
QUALIFICATIONS/REQUIREMENTS
- Personal Support Work - Ontario College Certificate from an accredited community college
- Basic Cardiac Life Support (B.C.L.S.) program, Level II: Basic Rescuer certification
- Current CPR & First Aid
- Recent patient care experience as a PSW in an acute care hospital setting preferred
- Knowledge and experience using proper body mechanics for a one-person transport by wheelchair or stretcher; demonstrated understanding of proper body mechanics when pushing, pulling, lifting, and transferring patients; working knowledge of stretchers, beds, wheelchairs, etc.
- Excellent verbal communication skills and the ability to work effectively with patients, families, and other members of the healthcare team
- Applies NHH values and professional practice standards to patient/client care and service.
- Basic computer skills word, excel, power point etc.
- Knowledge and understanding of person and family centered care with a geriatric focus
PHYSICAL EFFORT AND WORKING CONDITIONS
- Effectively handle a challenging workload (i.e., heavy patient/client volumes, high acuity)
- Responds appropriately and professionally in high stress and emergency situations (i.e., patient/client trauma, death, etc.).; Sound critical thinking abilities
- Demonstrated ability to work independently and as a team member
- Excellent interpersonal and verbal communication skills; computer skills
- Demonstrated ability to perform duties with a customer/patient focus
- Proven good attendance record with capabilities of maintaining this same standard
- Standing, sitting, walking – possibly for prolonged periods, bending or squatting
- Pushing and pulling equipment and when transporting patients on stretchers/beds or wheelchairs
- Required to assist patients during the transfer to and from units within the hospital
- Maneuvering wheelchairs, stretchers, or beds through hospital corridors with and without patients
- May be required to wear personal protective apparel (e.g., Gowns, gloves, masks, goggles, respirator etc.) while performing duties; may at times be subjected to unpleasant tasks, sights and odours
- Follows safe and healthy work practices and maintains a safe and healthy work environment through attendance at educational programs, use of established reporting mechanisms for injuries, illness and hazards and adherence to health and safety related policies and procedures.
- Is aware of his/her contribution to patient safety ensures actions to support patient safety culture
- Proven good attendance record with capabilities of maintaining this same standard
EMPLOYMENT REQUIREMENTS
Successful applicants are required provide a satisfactory vulnerable sector criminal reference check, that was complete less than one year from the date of hire. This requirement must be met within the first sixty (60) days of employment.
Additionally, to the above, successful applicants are also required to complete the Health Care Worker Health review process which includes providing an up-to-date immunization record to ensure compliance with the Ontario Hospital Association Communicable Diseases Surveillance Protocols within the first thirty (30) days of employment. Northumberland Hills Hospital operates a mandatory COVID-19 vaccination policy for all staff.
