LOCATION
Located approximately 100 kilometres east of Toronto, NHH is a vibrant community hospital delivering a broad range of acute, post-acute, outpatient and diagnostic services. Directly serving a growing population of more than 60,000 residents spread across a mix of urban and rural settings, NHH directly employs approximately 750 people and relies on the additional support provided by a highly engaged and supportive network of physicians, midwives and volunteers.
ROLE OVERVIEW
Reporting to the Patient Care Manager, the Charge Nurse is accountable for providing unit leadership, guidance, direction, and mentorship ensuring efficient patient flow, utilization of all health human and material resources while ensuring safe patient care and a quality work environment in keeping with Northumberland Hills Hospital’s mission, vision, values and strategic direction.
The Charge Nurse provides hands-on leadership at the point of care and demonstrates responsibility and accountability for facilitating a work environment that exemplifies interprofessional and ethical practice; professional autonomy; point-of-care provider empowerment and engagement within a shared governance philosophy; and positive recognition through facilitation and advocacy for professional development and continuing education opportunities for all point of care staff.
The Charge Nurse provides consistent and timely responses to point of care staff across the unit, recommends strategies for care processes and oversees their implementation; assesses staffing and workload on a shift to shift basis, redistributing workload as required; works together with staff, management, and Access and Flow to coordinate plans to increase bed flexibility as required; compiles and communicates relevant data and reports to the Patient Care Managers with regard to identified issues and opportunities.
As an integral part of this role, the Charge Nurse works collaboratively with the Patient Care Managers, Access, and Flow Specialist; Professional Practice Leaders, and all members of the interprofessional health care team, and all patient care units and departments throughout NHH to ensure the operational efficiency of the hospital, ultimately allowing the units to provide ‘Exceptional patient care. Every time’.
QUALIFICATIONS/REQUIREMENTS
Required
- Registered nurse in good standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario
- Minimum 3 years Emergency Nursing experience REQUIRED (Within the last 5 years)
- ED charge nurse experience REQUIRED
- ACLS certification REQUIRED
- PALS certification REQUIRED
- Coronary Care 1 certification REQUIRED
- TNCC certification preferred
- CTAS certification and recent triage experience (within the last 6 months) REQUIRED
- Proven experience and understanding of effective and efficient access and patient flow strategies and clinical utilization process
- Evidence of effective communication and conflict resolution skills with the ability to develop positive working relationships with all stakeholders promoting collective problem solving approaches
- Demonstrated commitment to interprofessional practice standards
- Excellent interpersonal skills with a strong orientation to staff development and staff empowerment
- Demonstrated transformational leadership skills
- Demonstrates a professional and respectful attitude to patients, public, volunteers and colleagues and fosters good public relations and effective working relationships
- Ability to respond to many simultaneous/competing demands from patients, families, staff, physicians, and other programs and departments
- Understanding of compliance with all Occupational Health and Safety Legislation and Infection Prevention and Control practices; proven good attendance record with capability of maintaining this same standard

The successful incumbent will meet the requirements of the position description for departmental specific Registered Nurse.
RECRUITMENT INITIATIVES

EMPLOYMENT REQUIREMENTS
Successful applicants are required to provide a satisfactory vulnerable sector criminal reference check, that was complete less than one year from the date of hire. This requirement must be met within the first sixty (60) days of employment.
Additionally to the above, successful applicants are also required to complete the Health Care Worker Health review process which includes providing an up-to-date immunization record to ensure compliance with the Ontario Hospital Association Communicable Diseases Surveillance Protocols within the first thirty (30) days of employment. Northumberland Hills Hospital operates a mandatory COVID-19 vaccination policy for all staff.
