LOCATION
Located approximately 100 kilometres east of Toronto, NHH is a vibrant community hospital delivering a broad range of acute, post-acute, outpatient and diagnostic services. Directly serving a growing population of more than 60,000 residents spread across a mix of urban and rural settings, NHH directly employs approximately 750 people and relies on the additional support provided by a highly engaged and supportive network of physicians, midwives and volunteers
ROLE OVERVIEW
Reporting directly to the Chief Nurse Executive and with a matrix report to the Patient Care Manager for PASS, the Nurse Practitioner (NP) is a registered nurse in the extended class who holds a Master’s Degree in Nursing with expertise in one or more clinical nursing specialties. In keeping with Northumberland Hills Hospital’s mission, vision, and values, the NP is responsible for working together with the interprofessional team toward development, implementation, and evaluation of patient plans of care, and uses advanced knowledge, skill, and judgment in providing care and solutions for complex health-care issues for a specified patient population. In February 2021, this role evolved into NP as Most Responsible Provider, which includes participation in on call.
The NP utilizes a holistic approach that is grounded in evidence with an emphasis on health promotion and illness/injury prevention. The role includes direct comprehensive patient care including advanced assessment, diagnosing, prescribing, ordering, and interpreting lab, radiology, and ultrasound tests as per defined regulations and legislated scope of practice.
In addition to direct clinical care, the NP plays a leading role in the development and implementation of applicable clinical guidelines and protocols, promotes the use of research and evidence-based practice, provides expert support and consultation, and facilitates system change. The NP is committed to lifelong learning and is committed to promoting, leading, and contributing to the learning of others.
This position is based within the Post-Acute Specialty Services program with a primary focus on patients within the Inpatient Rehabilitation Unit and may include additional responsibilities to cross-cover within other inpatient units as and when required.
QUALIFICATIONS/REQUIREMENTS
- Master's Degree in Nursing required
- Registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario in the Extended Class; NP adult preferred, or a combination of Primary Health Care Nurse Practitioner Certificate and previous relevant hospital experience, minimum three years’ experience
- Applicable specialty certification(s) preferred
- Experience in geriatrics required
- Experience in inpatient rehabilitation preferred
- Emergency experience an asset
- Relevant professional and specialty organization membership(s) (e.g., RNAO/NPAO, CGNA) preferred
- Current BLS certificate required
- Demonstrates behaviors consistent with Northumberland Hospital core values

- Excellent assessment, planning, organizational, problem solving, communication, teaching, time management and evaluation skills
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills

EMPLOYMENT REQUIREMENTS
Successful applicants are required provide a satisfactory vulnerable sector criminal reference check, that was complete less than one year from the date of hire. This requirement must be met within the first sixty (60) days of employment.
Additionally to the above, successful applicants are also required to complete the Health Care Worker Health review process which includes providing an up-to-date immunization record to ensure compliance with the Ontario Hospital Association Communicable Diseases Surveillance Protocols within the first thirty (30) days of employment. Northumberland Hills Hospital operates a mandatory COVID-19 vaccination policy for all staff.
