LOCATION
Located approximately 100 kilometres east of Toronto, NHH is a vibrant community hospital delivering a broad range of acute, post-acute, outpatient and diagnostic services. Directly serving a growing population of more than 60,000 residents spread across a mix of urban and rural settings, NHH directly employs approximately 750 people and relies on the additional support provided by a highly engaged and supportive network of physicians, midwives and volunteers.
ROLE OVERVIEW
Reporting to the Vice President People, Culture and Organizational Effectiveness, the Director of Quality, Safety and Risk will enhance Northumberland Hills Hospital’s capacity to ensure a quality patient experience using data and processes focused on continuous improvement, risk management and patient safety. The position plays a significant leadership role in helping to align decision support with the implementation of quality initiatives, improving the flow and use of information, developing queries and analytical products to support boards and leaders in their quality improvement goals and teams engaged in clinical process change. Using a variety of tools and facilitation methods the Director of Quality, Safety and Risk will enable a just culture by supporting and empowering others, generating enthusiasm, and engaging constructively with others in alignment with the strategic direction of the organization.
QUALIFICATIONS/REQUIREMENTS
- Minimum (5) years experience in a healthcare setting
- Minimum (2) year experience in patient safety, risk management, incident investigation and analysis, and project management
- Undergraduate degree in a health-related discipline from a recognized institution, master’s degree preferred
- Regulated health professional with certification or experience in a health care discipline/healthcare setting
- Experience and knowledge with Patient Safety and Quality projects or initiatives, electronic clinical incident management systems, performance measurement, data reporting analysis, quality improvement principles and Quality of Care Reviews
- Outstanding knowledge of inpatient quality and safety, including experience working with risk/patient safety related tools, practices, methodologies, and frameworks
- Active involvement in developing, implementing, and monitoring Quality Improvement Plans
- Proficient knowledge of legislation and regulatory environment applicable to hospitals/healthcare, including Excellent Care for All Act, Quality of Care Information Protection Act and Privacy Act
- Leads the organization through both the Accreditation Canada process as well as the Health Insurance Reciprocal of Canada (HIROC) Risk Assessment Checklist program
- Previous experience in quality/risk improvement in health care including process redesign and system implementation experience
- Leads the development of Decision Support indicators through a balanced scorecard approach that focuses on key performance indicators
- Oversee, develop, support, and coordinate emergency preparedness education, training, and associated activities across the organization
- Strong critical thinking, analytical and problem-solving skills with ability to proficiently interpret clinical documentation
- Demonstrates excellent effective objective interpersonal and communication skills along with investigative, teaching and facilitation skills
- Demonstrates a commitment to customer service when dealing with patients, colleagues and volunteers and other members of the community and public
- Highly organized multitasker and detail-oriented professional with ability to work well under pressure and meet deadlines in a fast-paced and unpredictable environment
- Experience in healthcare software use (e.g., incident reporting systems)
- Advanced computer knowledge and skills in applications such as, but not limited to, Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint and Access) and Adobe Acrobat, Visio
ASSETS
- Certification in Patient Safety
- Certification in Project Management
- Bronze level training in Lean facilitation and or equivalent experience

Due to the ongoing pandemic, Northumberland Hills Hospital may choose to conduct parts/all of the hiring process virtually. The successful incumbent should expect the role to be in person. EMPLOYMENT REQUIREMENTS
Successful applicants are required provide a satisfactory vulnerable sector criminal reference check, that was complete less than one year from the date of hire. This requirement must be met within the first sixty (60) days of employment.
In addition to the above, successful applicants are also required to complete the Health Care Worker Health review process which includes providing an up-to-date immunization record to ensure compliance with the Ontario Hospital Association Communicable Diseases Surveillance Protocols within the first thirty (30) days of employment. Northumberland Hills Hospital operates a mandatory COVID-19 vaccination policy for all staff.
