SUMMARY OF DUTIES:

The primary role of this position is transporting stable patients or assisting with those patients requiring nursing supervision during transport to destinations within the Hospital. Secondarily, other responsibilities or duties are carried out when no patient transport is required.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:

  • Personal Support Work - Ontario College Certificate from an accredited community college
  • Basic Cardiac Life Support (B.C.L.S.) program, Level II:Basic Rescuer certification
  • Current CPR & First Aid
  • Recent patient care experience as a PSW in a acute care hospital setting preferred
  • Knowledge and experience using proper body mechanics for a one-person transport by wheelchair or stretcher; demonstrated understanding of proper body mechanics when pushing, pulling, lifting and transferring patients; working knowledge of stretchers, beds, wheelchairs, etc.
  • Excellent verbal communication skills and the ability to work effectively with patients, families, and other members of the healthcare team.
  • Applies NHH values and professional practice standards to patient/client care and service.
  • Basic computer skills word, excel, power point ect.
  • Knowledge and understanding of person and family centered care with a geriatric focus

PHYSICAL EFFORT AND WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Effectively handle a challenging workload (i.e., heavy patient/client volumes, high acuity).
  • Responds appropriately and professionally in high stress and emergency situations (i.e., patient/client trauma, death, etc.).; Sound critical thinking abilities
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and as a team member                                
  • Excellent interpersonal and verbal communication skills; computer skills
  • Demonstrated ability to perform duties with a customer/patient focus
  • Proven good attendance record with capabilities of maintaining this same standard.
  • Standing, sitting, walking – possibly for prolonged periods, bending or squatting
  • Pushing and pulling equipment and when transporting patients on stretchers/beds or wheelchairs
  • Required to assist patients during the transfer to and from units within the hospital
  • Maneuvering wheelchairs, stretchers, or beds through hospital corridors with and without patients
  • May be required to wear personal protective apparel (e.g. Gowns, gloves, masks, goggles, respirator etc.) while performing duties; may at times be subjected to unpleasant tasks, sights and odours
  • Follows safe and healthy work practices and maintains a safe and healthy work environment through attendance at educational programs, use of established reporting mechanisms for injuries, illness and hazards and adherence to health and safety related policies and procedures.
  • Is aware of his/her contribution to patient safety ensures actions to support patient safety culture
  • Proven good attendance record with capabilities of maintaining this same standard.
