Three local residents welcomed to NHH Board as Community Member volunteers

Three new Community Members were formally welcomed to the Northumberland Hills Hospital Board table at the February meeting of the Board earlier tonight: Kai Liu, Don Morrison and Bree Nixon.

“Community Members hold full voting privileges on the NHH Board Committees they serve,” said Board Chair Elizabeth Selby. “Community Members may also be appointed to a Board Director position when a vacancy occurs.”

The newest members bring the total number of Community Members currently serving the Hospital’s skills-based, volunteer Board to six. They were recruited during the open call for interest issued by the Nominating Committee of the Board last September.

Joining the Board from Cobourg (Ward 2) are Don Morrison and Kai Liu.

Morrison brings a unique combination of public accounting and business expertise accumulated over a distinguished career as a Chartered Accountant and financial executive. Previously a Board Director of Northumberland Health Care Corporation (1999-2004), Morrison served as Chairman of the New Hospital Committee (1999-2001) and was Board Chair (2001-2004) at the time NHH opened its doors in October 2003. He will support the NHH Board in his current capacity on both the Finance and Audit Committee and Governance Committee.

Kai Liu, known locally in his capacity as Chief of Police for the Town of Cobourg, brings a wealth of experience in community policing. As a trailblazer, in 1986 Liu was recruited by the Ottawa Police Force as the City’s first Asian police officer. During his career serving police forces in Ottawa, Gananoque and, since September 2012, Cobourg, he has held many challenging positions and developed a reputation as an innovator, a champion for diversity in the workplace and a strong mentor and advocate for women. As a Community Member of the NHH Board Liu now serves on the Quality and Safety Committee.

Joining the Board as a Port Hope-based (Ward 1) Community Member is Bree Nixon.

Nixon’s 20-year career has focused on administration and communication. Raised in Port Hope, Nixon is currently employed with Canadian Nuclear Laboratories as a Communications Officer working with the Port Hope Area Initiative Project. Prior, Nixon was CEO of the Port Hope and District Chamber of Commerce for six years and also managed the Service Ontario office in Port Hope.  Nixon’s other skills include media experience; she worked as Eastern Office Manager for Classical 96.3 and 103.1 FM in Cobourg and served as Advertising Services Manager, specializing in American fashion magazines, at Dodd Media Group.   As a Community Member of the NHH Board Nixon serves on the Quality and Safety Committee.

“We are already preparing for our next call for interest for Community Committee members,” said Cyndi Gilmer, NHH Board Director and Chair of the Nominating Committee. “Watch for ads in our local paper as well as information on the hospital’s website, nhh.ca, and community newsletter.”
